Dish of the Week: Avocado boat at the PokéSpot
If Instagram could have a favorite dish, it might be the poké bowl with an avocado boat at the PokéSpot. Recently imported to downtown Atlanta from New York City, the PokéSpot is a small chain that checks boxes for nearly every fast-casual restaurant trend there is. The restaurant is known for a signature preparation called the avocado boat: poké that is piled into the indentation of half an avocado, peeled and pitted.
It’s not clear what’s stopping other poké restaurants from copying the PokéSpot’s signature, but the dish itself certainly is a good idea. Avocado often is relegated to the “additional cost” section of the menu, and other restaurants rarely seem to give you enough to warrant the fee. It’s refreshing to get an entire half of a fresh alligator pear when you spring for the avocado boat.
Of course, poké bowls typically are constructed to order, so yours likely will be different than the bowl pictured above. This one included garlic-marinated tuna poké, white rice, imitation crab, green onion, edamame and roasted seaweed, with sprinklings of bonito flakes and sesame seeds. The rich, creamy avocado pulled the other ingredients together, and added heft to what was a relatively light portion.
The avocado boat might be the vessel that helps the PokéSpot navigate the shifting tides of social media dining trends.
