You may not know it, but the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) offers Cider Style Guidelines as part of its judge training and sanctioned competitions.
And so for the first time, a cider is this week’s Beer Pick. And UrbanTree Cidery, Atlanta’s first craft cider maker, is featured as it celebrates its two-year anniversary with a party on Saturday and Sunday at its Westside tasting room on Howell Mill Road.
To mark the occasion, UrbanTree will release its new Rose Cider, made with hand-picked Georgia apples and rose botanicals. That one will be available at bars, restaurants, and shops around Atlanta soon. But since I haven’t tried it, yet, one of my favorites, Barrel-Aged Craft Cider, is the pick.
Barrel-Aged Craft Cider

Among the newest and smallest American craft cideries, Urban Tree uses the juice from its own north Georgia hand-pressed apples to make its Barrel-Aged Craft Cider, which is fermented with champagne yeast, and aged in Nicaraguan rum barrels.
Among the distinctive aromas and flavors, you’ll find notes of caramel, vanilla, oak, a touch of smoke and a slightly boozy character that arises in the off-dry finish.
UrbanTree recommends pairing its Barrel-Aged Craft Cider with roasted and grilled dishes and strong cheeses. I think it would make a perfect match for pulled pork barbecue or grilled pork chops, or a traditional raw cow’s milk English cheddar such as Keen’s.
