Atlanta’s SweetWater Brewing Co. celebrates turning 21 on Saturday with rocking party at the brewery featuring live music from Dirty Heads, Twiddle, People’s Blues of Richmond, and Bird Dog Jubilee.
But for beer geeks, the big news is the release of 21st Anniversary Oud Bruin, which will be available for the first time on Saturday at the event, and on shelves next week.
And in honor of SweetWater turning 21, 21st Anniversary Oud Bruin is this week’s Beer Pick.
SweetWater 21st Anniversary Oud Bruin
SweetWater Brewing Co., Atlanta, GA.
Available in cork-and-caged bottles for a limited time
Brewed to celebrate SweetWater’s 21st anniversary, this sour, Belgian-style brown ale from the Woodlands Project was frermented with acetobacter, lactobacillus, pediococcus, saccharomyces and brettanomyces, and aged in American oak foeders with cherries.
At 7.9-percent AbV, it’s tart in a sour cherry sort of way, with fruity, wine-like esters in the nose, a mild malt character, and little in the way of carbonation or hop bitterness. It will be interesting to see how it develops after a year or two in the bottle.
The tart cherry flavors of Oud Bruin make a great match for charcuterie and mild cheeses, as well as rich dishes such as pan-roasted duck with cherry sauce or foie gras with figs.
