5 new places to eat ramen around Atlanta (and 4 more to come)

In case you missed the memo, ramen is hot (both literally and figuratively). Several spots have cropped up in metro Atlanta over the past few months dedicated to serving up ramen of both the classic and with-a-twist variety.

Check out all the new (and newish) places to eat ramen around town, and a few that are set to open soon:

Nexto: The spot from Mihoko Obunai, who formerly operated the ramen pop-up Ramen Freak, opened Oct. 24 next to sister restaurant Two Urban Licks in Old Fourth Ward.

The menu features several types of ramen including spicy bacon, gyoki yuzu shoyu made with rock shrimp and scallops, vegetable curry and kurobuta tonkatsu made with pork belly. Also offered are cold and hot small plates, robata grill items and craft cocktails.

Taiyo Ramen: Pan-Asian restaurant Makan recently changed its name and concept to focus on craft ramen.

The new menu offers tonkotsu ramen, shio ramen made with local Beautiful Briny Sea salt, Hokkaido-style seafood ramen, duck ramen, a Korean-style beef and kimchi ramen and a fall vegetable ramen, as well as side dishes including pork buns and dumplings.

Ton Ton: Guy Wong — who made a name for himself with sushi spot Miso Izakaya and Vietnamese eatery Le Fat — brought his talents to Ponce City Market over the summer with his entry in the ramen game.
Ramen options inclue classic tonkotsu, yasai and Invincible Dan Dan noodles made with minced pork. There are also sides including tebasaki wings and curry rice, and yakitori will soon be added to the menu.

Jinya Ramen: The chain opened its first Georgia location over the summer with a menu focusing on ramen and “Japanese soul food” (check out information on a planned second location below).

Ramen options include the spicy creamy vegan ramen, the garlicky cha-cha-cha, spicy chicken ramen and the classic tonkatsu white. Non-noodle options include the pork chashu bowl and Tokyo curry rice, seasonal dishes such as the Hiyashi cold ramen, and Japanese street food including pork gyoza, crispy kale lollipops and Jinya quinoa salad.

Hajime: The owners of Suwanee ramen favorite Umaido opened this similar spot earlier this year in a plaza at the corner of Cheshire Bridge and LaVista Roads.

Ramens include traditional tonkotsu, honey miso and wasabi shoyu. Side dishes include grilled shishito peppers, seaweed salad and takoyaki.

Ramen coming to Atlanta:

Jinya is set to open a second metro Atlanta location on Roswell Road in Buckhead early next year.

Ramen Station, from the team behind Taiyo Ramen, is coming to the new Larkin on Memorial complex in Reynoldstown in summer 2017.

A new ramen venture from the team behind Genji Sushi Bar is set to open in 2017 as part of The Roast, the new full-service restaurant inside Whole Foods at 650 Ponce de Leon Ave., across from Ponce City Market.

Wagaya will open its second location in the former Bad Dog Taqueria spot in Emory Point by the end of the year. The first location, at 339 14th St. NW, serves up a variety of ramen as well as sushi and classic Japanese dishes.
