Gladys Knight’s Chicken and Waffles is open for business.

The restaurant concept, which operates three locations in metro Atlanta, was abruptly shut down on Tuesday by the Georgia Department of Revenue when authorities opened a criminal investigation into the business dealings of Gladys Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, who owns the restaurants.

Hankerson, 39, is accused of taking a total of $650,000 in state sales and withholding taxes, which after penalties and interest totals more than $1 million. He has since been released on a $20,000 bond from Clayton County jail.

Gladys Knight’s Chicken and Waffles has locations in downtown Atlanta, Cascade Road in southwest Atlanta and in Lithonia. All three establishments have since re-opened and are operating with regular business hours.
