James Beard-nominated pastry chef Aaron Russell and his wife Jamie Russell will open a neighborhood restaurant and bar called Poor Hendrix at Hosea + 2nd, the team behind the new East Lake development announced.

Russell’s pastry chef resume includes stints at Nikolai’s Roof,  the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead, the Chocolate Bar and  Restaurant Eugene.

According to a press release,  Poor Hendrix (named after the Russell’s rescue dog), “will offer two types of fare starting in the early fall. The café will focus on serving simple, perfectly prepared classic dishes that compliment an affordable, but thoughtful wine list. The bar will feature small plates of salty, spicy, and savory comfort food engineered to go best with drinking in a pub atmosphere.”

“We hope to create a space with humble interiors and no pretensions – just a comfortable place to enjoy fabulous food and drink with friends,” Aaron Russell said in the release.

Construction of the Hosea & 2nd development is underway on two of the four corners of the intersection 2nd Avenue and Hosea Williams Drive in East Lake.

Recently, Mike Nelson and Clay Harper, owners of Fellini’s Pizza and La Fonda Latina, and their development partners, Jay Martin and Nathan Bolster of ReDevStudio, closed on the acquisition of a third corner from CF Foundation, Inc.

In addition to Poor Hendrix, two additional restaurants are planned for the development and a new location of the Greater Good BBQ is slated to open in the spring in a converted gas station.
