Ole! It’s National Tequila Day! This Mexican spirit is made by steaming the hearts of the blue agave plant, then mincing the pulp, combining it with water and fermenting to make a distilled and bottle spirit. The bottle must contain at least 51 percent blue agave to be classified as tequila. So how are you going to get in the “spirit” to celebrate? We’ve got a round-up of some tequila cocktails.
Tin Lizzy’s Cantina
All locations are featuring one-ounce pours of 1800 tequila for $2, so pick your elixir- will drink it straight or top it off? House margaritas are $4, but if you want to venture to a more creative imbibe, the coconut-infused tequila with orange liqueur and sour mix give pina coladas a run for their money.
Escorpion Tequila Bar and Cantina
800 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta
Looks like five is the lucky number here, so clock out on time because Escorpion is an easy walk from Midtown offices. The sleek, monochromatic dining room is a perfect parking spot for the evening. Mexico’s number one selling tequila, El Jimador is $5 for a shot, while their tradicional margaritas are also $5 today.
Tacos and Tequilas Mexican Grill
Multiple locations : Buckhead, Cumming, Ponce de Leon
A laid back, festive vibe greets you at any of these locations, and it’s a no brainer to wind down with chips and salsa while you throw back a shot of tequila, on special for $4. A harder decision: Patron, Herradura or el Jimador?
242 Boulevard SE, Atlanta
This humble canteen in the Old Fourth Ward boasts over 100 blue agave tequilas at the bar. Pick from one of their 24 Anejo tequilas for sipping. For a mix of flavor, five of their new tequila cocktails feature Dobel Maestro tequila. And for tonight, the restaurant is offering a $6 special on shots of Herradura Silver.
Multiple Locations: Virginia Highlands and Brookhaven
The Here To Serve team travels to Jalisco, Mexico each year to sample six barrels of Herradura Double Reposado before selecting two to offer on their menus. This 11 month aged (or “rested”) tequila then moves to a new oak barrel for an additional month. With earthy and butterscotch flavors, this tequila is the perfect pour in the $5 house margarita special.
